Remember that East came to hand with heartK and led a diamond at trick three. After three rounds of diamonds East ruffed and continued with spadeQ. South knows that East must be 4-5-2-2 after North's peter in trumps, and all this means that it's fatal to cover spadeQ! Why? Because if South does not cover then declarer is caught in a dilemma. If he continues with another finesse then North ruffs with his last trump, but if he draws the trump immediately with heartQ then there will be no way back to hand for the second spade finesse (against the ten). I'm ashamed to say it, but South was your errant correspondent.
