South feared that after East's failure to double either 4heart or 5heart for a lead then the heart finesse was likely to be wrong - hence the search for that vital extra chance. Assuming the trumps were going to break - always likely to be necessary, the club play was a no-loser. Even if West did turn up with clubQ then the heart finesse would still be available as a last resort.
