Double dummy analyser: makeable contracts
West North East South
3NT* Pass 6NT
Pass Pass Pass

* long solid minor

North's bid was silly. OK, yes, 3NT does show a long, solid minor - but not usually nine cards long. If South is strong then North has an unexpected two extra potential tricks that South will not take into account. If South is weak then it will be easier for the East-West to get into the bidding and judge the final contract more accurately. Although a 3NT opening does have the merit of allowing the final contract to be played from the correct side, surely 5club is a better bet from North. And South?
