Surely the greatest crime was South's poor judgement over 2spade and, later, 3spade. With no wasted values in spades some sort of trial bid - 3diamond? - would have been called for. North-South can then reach a good game on minimal values. Even if the defence starts off with diamondA, small spade to East's king, diamond ruff, declarer can still get home by reading the trump situation correctly.
