Of course it doesn't really matter which philosophy you adopt - as long as you and your partner agree! Personally I think this is a good hand, but at the table South started with an initial 2diamond and followed by bidding spades twice. North, with his excellent controls, made an invitational raise and South had no hesitation in going to the small slam.
