This is quite a common situation which needs thinking through. If take the seemingly obvious line of heartA, spadeA, heartKQ, diamond, the defence will win and play a trump, leaving you a trick short if the trumps don't break. No, you must ignore the seductive attraction of flashing over to spadeA to discard your club loser and play a diamond immediately. Although this means you will have to lose a club, you are a tempo ahead and will be able to ruff two diamonds in the dummy - more than adequate compensation.
