You played clubJ? Fine. You played low? Also equally fine. What you must not do is ruff this club but discard a heart instead! This applies a we-win-or-you-lose dilemma to the defence. Either North continues with another club, in which case you make the contract on a complete cross-ruff, or he switches to a trump - allowing you to ruff a diamond high and draw trumps. If you ruff the third club you're finished, unable to prevent the opposition playing a round of trumps to kill the cross ruff.
