You can guess what happened at the other table - with East playing the contract South led a semi-automatic diamond. North would have had to be a genius to see that an immediate club switch was required now, and after three rounds of diamonds declarer was able to pick up the trumps and ditch his club loser on the fifth diamond. So there is the paradox in this hand - it was better for declarer that the defender gets his ruff early.
