The difficult case is when West shows out on diamondA at trick four. We proceed as before - heartA, diamondQ, clubA, diamondA throwing a club, but when West discards the winning line is to play him for spades and throw heartQ and a spade on diamondKJ! We cross to spadeK, praying that the clubs break. They don't, but of course by now West has been squeezed, and dummy's last spade is our vital last trick. Very difficult indeed. The hand shown was the actual layout - a beautiful yet technical nightmare for anybody. We can all crow when we do something good, but it takes a very good player to instantly recognise why he missed the winning line on a hand like this. Declarer began in the usual way - heartA, diamondQ, clubA, diamondA, but when West showed out he crossed back to hand to cash the top clubs. This had the effect of squeezing dummy prematurely.
