In reality, the 4-5-2-2 shape is one of the easier combinations to cater for - assuming that you play transfers. 3diamond is a transfer to hearts and now East can bid spades to show 4-5, or better, in the majors. West has the choice of going to four of major with a minimum fit, or making an advance cue-bid of 4club/4diamond if his hand is particularly suitable. In this case West reverts to No Trumps to end the auction.
