East, Jeremy Flint, and West, Rob Sheehan, were playing the dreaded "Multi". Flint's 2NT was a relay - I suspect he was using it partly as a genuine enquiry - he'd be willing to play 4 opposite a weak 2, and partly as an intimdatory bid for the opponents' benefit. Sheehan's 3NT showed that he possessed, in effect, a 21-22 2NT opener. 4,4,4 and 4NT were natural.
