Most Easts passed over 1diamond and South bid 1NT for want of a better bid. East was still reluctant to come in and South played in 1NT. Although West usually led a heart there were only six defensive tricks and South scored +90. The best North-South scores came when they played in a cold 3club or scrambled home in 2spade. They scored +110.

Oh yes, perhaps the North at the first table ought to have doubled 3heart for a highly aggressive take-out. South might pass for penalties and rack up at least 200 for a top.
P.S. What happened to the 1spade overcaller with just spadeAQJ? Flat board in 4spade but played the other way up! I was his partner and held

Note 04/06/2024: The 1spade overcaller was Graham Marshall, my close friend and mad as box of frogs. He is sadly no longer with us but none of his many friends will never forget him.
