East covered with diamond8, North inserted the nine and declarer won with the king. After declarer drew three rounds of trumps West was no doubt also wishing he had bid 2heart instead, but then East cut loose with a club. The defence cashed two clubs and cotinued with three rounds of spades, solving one of declarer's problems. In with spadeQ, East simply ducked a diamond to end-play North. Either he conceded a ruff and discard or led in to the diamond tenace. N-S +100.
