This is a game-forcing sequence and many Wests decided to mark time with 4club and see what partner did next. When East bid 4spade, not appearing reluctant to enthuse about slam prospects, West just punted the slam on general values. At another table West selected a forcing 4club for his second bid. East bid 4spade and the net result was the same.
