North took a flyer with 3NT! East led spade4 and dummy won with spadeA as West showed three. The clubs were rattled off and poor East found himself going through the mangle, caught in a sort of criss-cross pseudo strip-squeeze without the count. He threw two spades easily enough, a low heart could be spared with some discomfort, but what was he supposed to throw next? If East threw a spade then declarer would cash spadeK and return to hand with a diamond having two more diamonds and spadeJ to cash, whereas if East throws a diamond declarer cashes diamondAKQ and crosses over to spadeK for the established diamond winner...
