I think pass stands out at this form of scoring, but our intrepid East was there with 2NT, whereupon West leapt to 4heart. The distinguished writer was a highly eminent player who continues to operate at the top level even today. He made no comment on the bidding, merely that the final contract was optimistic. Too true!

South leads spadeK, the eight appears from North, and you duck. clubQ is South's next offering, so take it from there.
