. . . if South had come to life with 6NT, North would have bid 7club and South converted to 7diamond to show the red suits. North might prefer 7heart now, and so would East - Double! On a spade lead North ruffs in the dummy and cashes heartA. Minus 1100 is assured now, but if declarer tries to enter hand via a diamond then East ruffs, accesses his partner's hand twice in clubs and takes two further ruffs. North-South would be minus 1400!

Final note: in Duncan and Susan's room the opposition settled in 5spade for an 11 IMP gain to England. The par result is 7diamond doubled by South for minus 800 - but who would have thought it?
