Our adopted West was undaunted. He flashed in with spadeK and immediately switched to clubQ! When declarer played low and the queen held, West continued with a small club. Thinking that West had started with clubQJ declarer played low, so East won with the jack and switched back to a diamond. Declarer won and continued with spadeQ, ducked by East. A third round of spades was won by East who reverted to clubs and 1NT was two off.

As 1NT was only one down at the other table the swing was 2 IMPs - precisely the winning margin of victory in the match.
