At the table East, a strong player and normally a very reliable bidder, bid an uncharacteristically lazy 5club. At the time I wondered why he hadn't bid 4spade, but it was only when I polled some real bidders and they responded with "Yawn, 3diamond, yawn. What's the problem?", that I thought yes, keep it simple, stupid. You can see what might well happen over 3diamond. Partner will either jump to 5club on the basis that his seven count has become huge, or he will raise to 4diamond to suggest an alternative trump suit. In both cases 6club should become the contract.
