Were you tempted to try spadeA? Could West be falsecarding trivially and North merely have, for instance, little other than spadeJ9643 and a slightly menacing demeanour? Partnership discipline is worth its weight in gold in these situations, for if you can trust North to have a six card suit then your duty is to switch, and a club is the obvious answer.
