There is a move towards 2diamond becoming a genuine/impossible dual-purpose negative in these situations - very much akin to the use of a 1diamond negative in the old Precision Club. I think it makes good sense, for it will soon become apparent whether responder is weak or strong, and valuable bidding space can be conserved for responder's hands in the 5-7 point range. The opposition at my table started 2club-2NT and eventually North propelled himself to 6spade. South correctly judged that any slam would better from his hand and converted to 6NT.
