Problem 1. You may remember you had to decide what to do over 1diamond from partner, double from South. My learned friends tell me that 5diamond, which is what West chose, is much too over the top with only four trumps, 3diamond and 4diamond being the most popular choices. My learned friends also tell me that 6diamond, which is what East chose next, was also slight madness . East-West duly received -300 for their excesses.

One declarer played in 5diamond doubled and received clubK lead. He realised that a spade trick could be vital as it would not possible to ruff all his losers, and after cashing heartA led a low spade. The defenders woodenly refused to play trumps at any stage so East made all his trumps separately, diamondK falling under the ace at trick thirteen.
