This type of hand shows the difference between a good, solid (but not necessarily expert) player and those who cannot cut the ice. At the table North won and led a small spade (why not the queen?) to the nine. He now ran diamondJ to East's queen and East was not hard pushed to return a diamond for West to ruff. After cashing a heart West exited with a trump to leave North helpless. There were no entries for a squeeze and the defence eventually took a club trick.
