When we scored up the Christmas lights came on early as our captain began to glow, beginning with a gently suffused rose pink and eventually graduating through a pulsing vermillion to an incandescent white heat as he resignedly explained that we had not achieved an optimal result on the board. For some reason he chose to ignore West's careful declarer play that had restricted the loss on board 9 to -3930 and saved a valuable IMP. It seems a little unnecessarily hard hearted to mention that 7spade is absolutely cold on any lead (with the aid of the spade finesse).
