East entered the festive season a little early when he made the "obvious" redouble to show first round control. South was well known as the local joker, so West convinced himself that 3heart had been one of South's little jests and duly passed 5heart redoubled. North, whom I, as East, found to be immune to mind control, went into the tank for an interminable period but eventually got it right.

If you make ambiguous, silly redoubles in an unfamiliar partnership then you expect to get punished, but 3400 was a bit over the top. A "partial dummy reversal" was attempted by declarer, and after four tricks I was half expecting to see West rack up +1150 (or whatever the score is), but the defence finally drew trumps and made eight tricks.
