Graham Kirby's theory is that you should open 1club with weakest and strongest of these black 5-5 two suiters, leaving the middle range to be opened with 1spade. East, a player of some stature himself, obviously concurred and duly opened 1club. After a fourth-suit-forcing sequence East found himself in 4spade on the lead of diamond3.

You rise with the king in dummy which loses to the ace and, after a short pause, North puts heartK on the table. No doubt you are relieved that North failed to continue diamonds, but how would you play to make the most of North's mistake
