PART THREE - THE DEFENCE HAS THE LAST WORD! Declarer should have been rewarded for thwarting East's plan, but the defence were not yet done. East found a countermeasure to declarer's recovery and launched a further attack. He lead a fourth round of diamonds and declarer was between a rock and a hard place. If he ruffed low (either in hand or dummy), West would score his precious nine of hearts, so he was forced to ruff 'high', say with the ten. When declarer drives out the Ace of trumps (he must lead a 'high' trump, say the King) then East gets in with the Ace and he pushes thru' his last diamond! Either West makes heart9 now, or if declarer ruffs 'high' again, West still has heart9 and heart6 over declarer's heartQ and heart5 and must score a trump trick.
