In the event our South at the other table, fortified by an interval glass of wine, competed all the way to 6spade(!!), but somehow she made nine tricks for a mere 500 away and a decent swing to us. As we won the event on split tie against this team, the hand was all important.

Eagle-eyed analysts will have spotted that with diamond10 coming down, 6NT by East is absolutely cold. So athough a spade contract could prove cheap, a sensible and possibly achievable result by North-South would be to defend 5heart or 5diamond undoubled.

I'm pleased to say that North/South were best of friends again by the next hand!
