The vast majority of players really don't want to hear what happened at the next table. Even a well-earned good result can sometimes leave a slightly bitter after taste of bad ethics, if not cheating. Back in the early 1970s, when silent bidders and bidding boxes were just a twinkle in the eye of the Rules and Ethics Committee, I remember hearing a loud bid of 6 at the next table, if not the result of said slam. No-one could have not heard it.Two boards later my partner opened a vulnerable 4 and I went on with an aggressive 5 cue-bid holding a good 14 count. Could I have really justified going on? The slam was cold, but the guilt still lingers.
