The Spade Finesse Was

The vast majority of players really don't want to hear what happened at the next table. Even a well-earned good result can sometimes leave a slightly bitter after taste of bad ethics, if not cheating. Back in the early 1970s, when silent bidders and bidding boxes were just a twinkle in the eye of the Rules and Ethics Committee, I remember hearing a loud bid of 6spade at the next table, if not the result of said slam. No-one could have not heard it.Two boards later my partner opened a vulnerable 4spade and I went on with an aggressive 5diamond cue-bid holding a good 14 count. Could I have really justified going on? The slam was cold, but the guilt still lingers.

Last year, someone who had been on one of those bridge-in-a-hotel weekends several years ago sent me a bridge story that he obviously needed to tell for cathartic purposes. Here is his story, mostly in his own words
