. . . this is your last chance! If you duck, South wins and clears the clubs. You can cross to dummy's spadeA, and cash diamond106, but South will take three of the last three tricks with heartAQ and club9. As you can see, if you read the clubs as breaking 4-3 and play South for heartA then you can rise with clubA at trick 5, cash spadeK, cross to dummy's spadeA to cash the diamonds and exit with a club. South is fixed and has to give you a ninth trick in hearts. Of course this is a line which also depends on South having fewer than three spades and, considering North's silence, is not a likely winner.

So, you probably took the best line by playing North for heartA . and went off like everyone else.
