# two

Almost everyone in the room played a spade to the ace - the classic safety play to guard against guessing which singleton honour East might have - if any. Had East played either spadeK or spadeJ declarer could give up a trump trick and use heartA as the vital entry to the remainder of the winning diamonds. Another South finessed the queen but found the 4-0 break too much too handle. The winning South decided that instead of finessing spadeQ she would run spade9 at trick two, losing (relative to a finesse of spadeQ) in the situation when East held singleton jack, but gaining when East held spadeK singleton, spadex or a spade void. This winning decision brought in 17 IMPs.
