In the Jurassic age North might have bid 2spade, but these days it's bad form to force with a two-suiter, and a quiet 1spade will suffice. This allows more space for the bidding to develop and there is always the outside possibility of a playable heart fit coming to light. After a Crowhurst-style enquiry of 2club (please describe your 1NT further), North was not stopping short of 6spade and East led club10.
