At the table North decided to bid 4NT Roman Key Card Blackwood (RKCB). The important cards as far as North was concerned were diamondAQ and clubA. Had South admitted to them (with 5spade) North would have bid the grand slam presumably. South didn't bother admitting anything, knowing that his strength would surely be enough for 7diamond, but although the contract was patently excellent, it was not a "gimme".
