Helen Sobel realised that the defence needed an extra trick to come from somewhere. Three diamonds and (assuming) two clubs would not be enough, so her thoughts turned to a trump promotion. Knowing that she would be holding longer trumps than Goren, she realised that the uppercut would have to be from her partner's hand, and accordingly underled her clubA to her partner's king. A club back to the ace and a further diamond, ruffed with heart10 by East, put the contract one down.

Declarer can actually get home by ruffing high at trick three, cashing two high trumps and playing on spades....the seductive danger of throwing that club is not immediately obvious.
