In the other room North decided that after this macho display of strength from his side he was going to bid a grand slam. However, he did not do a "After you partner!" by bidding 7club, he merely punted 7spade. Why?

Well, he knew that East would be more likely to be void in a side suit than West and therefore he would protect his partner from playing a contract where there would be a higher possibility of a ruff. You can see what happened:- North-South + 1510.
