I am afraid that I have been "economical with the truth" because of course the lead and bid problems come from a very closely related deal - the same one. When West was on lead against 7spade he knew that East must be very short in spades and deduced that his partner might have refrained from making a Lightner double for fear of scaring his opponents into a safer haven of 7spade - where they were known to have a fit. West duly had the courage of his convictions and led a spade. East-West +50.
