Declarer decided that it would be futile to draw trumps and attempt to establish a diamond. That would lead to defeat as the defence would be a tempo ahead and would eventually be able to cash an extra spade winner. Instead South cashed two rounds of clubs and two rounds of trumps ending in hand. She then played off clubKJ discarding two diamonds from dummy, allowing East to ruff. spadeK came next so declarer ruffed and exited with a diamond to dummy's queen, forcing East to concede an extra spade or diamond trick. Although East could have refused to ruff, the favourable diamond position meant that South would always be able to bring home the contract.
