Not one of the great bidding questions of our time, but you might care to discuss with your partner the exact nature of a 4NT bid in South's position, and whether it would be a possible alternative on South's actual hand. I suspect all roads would lead to 5diamond here and Smith preferred the direct route rather than suggest anything else by way of a 4NT detour. Auken doubled and led clubAK.
