Eric made no mistake by leading a spade! South, who had recently escaped from the local asylum, heard a little voice inside his head telling him to say 1spade. Even on seeing dummy, North was hopeful that East had led away from spadeA and thus give him the chance of a good story - 3NT made with the most tenuous of stoppers. It was not to be, for 3NT was two off with six of either minor available.

This next hand, from the last third of the match, was the final nail in our coffin...
