Reality was that at the table North did not double 3club and this drifted quietly off for N-S plus 200. When North opened 1heart (showing a five card suit) at the other table East naturally passed and South now bid 3heart! What's wrong with 1spade? North, obviously with a high regard for his own declarer play and his partner's conservative bidding, unbelievably went on to game. He went one off for his pains, so my friend duly racked up a useful gain after all.
