Expert pairs may reach the grand slam, which makes on cross-ruff lines whenever North is declarer, or when West fails to lead a trump if South is at the helm. Assuming West does make the normal lead of a trump, declarer is immediately warned of bad breaks when East shows out. He plays ace of hearts, ruffs a heart and cashes two top spades throwing losing diamonds. Returning to hand with a trump, declarer ruffs another heart, draws trumps and claims.
