Pass Pass Pass
At one table South leapt to 4heart and everyone passed. This contract made with an overtrick when West did not lead a trump. 4heart was also the chosen spot of an inexperienced pair and here West led a diamond. Declarer won, ruffed a diamond and cashed three rounds of spades. West ruffed, gave East a club ruff and on the spade return declarer erred by ruffing with heart10. Two more defensive ruffs put 4heart one down.

At another table East made a conservative pass and South opened 2club. The £ signs spun round in North's eyes as he jumped to a silly 4NT Blackwood. N-S eventually landed in 6spade which was sunk by the unkind trump break, fully justifying East's initial silence.
