The very poor declarer wins spadeA and leads a small heart. West flies in with heartK, puts partner in with clubA and receives a spade ruff for one off. The poor declarer wins spadeK on the table and leads heart9. Some of the time East does the flying in and tries to give his partner a spades ruff - fine, but only at the expense of West's natural trump trick. The average declarer also wins spadeK but sees there are two potential club losers. He cashes three diamonds throwing clubs and only then plays a trump. West wins, puts East in with clubA and obtains a spade ruff as before.

What about the expert declarer?
