Legend has it that in 1929 John Bennett and his wife Myrtle were playing at home against their friends Charlie and Mayme Hoffman. Bennet opened 1spade, Hoffman overcalled 2diamond and Mrs. Bennett jumped to 4spade. Unfortunately Bennett did not find the required line and went off, only to be called a "bum bridge player" by his wife who followed this by questioning the validity of his parents' marriage certificate. After criticising his wife's overbidding and IQ, Bennett clouted her and announced he would spend the night in a hotel. Myrtle ran from the room, returned with a gun, and shot him. Not only was she acquitted at the trial, she also claimed her husband's life assurance!

And all because he didn't find the right line..better sharpen up your declarer play!
