Hand 1. We have a definite diamond fit and game is possible if partner is good, but it might be 3NT, 4heart or even 5diamond. A non-forcing 3diamond seems to convey all the right messages. If partner has a 4-3-5-1 shape he can bid 3heart or 4heart, depending on how good he is. If he's 4-1-5-3, say spadeA1052heart6diamondAKJ73clubK104, then 3NT becomes an attractive option, while if he has spadeA1052heart6diamondAKJ1073clubK4 then 5diamond is better.

Joe sums it up by saying The jump preference to 3diamond describes the hand admirably in saying you have a raise of 1diamond to 3diamond with a heart suit. Expert A says A non-forcing 3diamond is simply obvious here - 2club would be a truly awful bid.
Marks: 3diamond 10, 2club 4, 2diamond 2, 2NT 1.
