Hand 1. We have a definite diamond fit and game is possible if partner is good, but it might be 3NT, 4 or even 5. A non-forcing 3 seems to convey all the right messages. If partner has a 4-3-5-1 shape he can bid 3 or 4, depending on how good he is. If he's 4-1-5-3, say A10526AKJ73K104, then 3NT becomes an attractive option, while if he has A10526AKJ1073K4 then 5 is better.

Joe sums it up by saying The jump preference to 3 describes the hand admirably in saying you have a raise of 1 to 3 with a heart suit. Expert A says A non-forcing 3 is simply obvious here - 2 would be a truly awful bid.
