Meckstroth won the lead with diamondQ and ruffed his losing diamond. After a successful club finesse, he cashed clubA and crossed over to dummy's spadeA. Nothing exciting happened, so declarer ruffed out clubK, ruffed diamondA(!!!), led clubJ from the dummy and discarded a heart loser as South ruffed with spadeQ.

By allowing for a favourable club situation - quite likely on the bidding - Meckstroth had thus given himself the best chance of making the contract against an adverse 3-1 trump break or any beastly trump promotion. He lost just two trumps tricks and one heart - plus 420.
