Why is declarer pratting about with hearts with that juicy club suit in dummy? He obviously has five running club tricks and if I ducked then he'd win heartK and run for home. Accordingly, I flashed in with heartA and cashed spadeJ, intending to put Ben in with spade10 for another diamond through. I realised what I'd done as soon as Ben dropped the spade10 under my jack. I was horrified. After all there are not usually 14 spades in a pack of cards. Declarer soon wrapped up 7 tricks for +760 instead of recording -400.

Realising that I must have spade9 for my opening lead, Ben's brilliant play of spade8 at trick three had shown me the correct defence in big bold flashing neon letters: underlead your spade9 for a vital second diamond through declarer.

Jim Mason, ever the droll wag, summed it up perfecfully:."So Kit, you failed to be able to count to 13, twice in the same deal. Quite a feat."
