He will make excuses in the "I'm sorry but I had a few hearts mixed up with my spades" mould, or possibly even "The attractive waitress distracted me as I took out my bid out of the bidding box". In this case, however, we can assume a deliberate mistake when he selected the obvious 4 to show the control(!).
