In the closed room, the Tory North-South were similarly busy cramping their opponents' bidding space, and East-West landed in the precarious diamond game. East was the Lib-Dem candidate - one of the few lady Grand Masters in the region - and she ruffed the club lead and continued in parallel fashion to her Tory counterpart in the open room by cashing two top hearts and two diamonds ending in dummy. A spade to the jack end-played South who exited with a club but, unlike the open room, the ruff was taken in the West hand while declarer shed a heart. Reading the situation brilliantly, East led a spade to the ace and exited with another. Again South was end-played, but this time it was fatal when declarer's last heart went away as dummy ruffed. East-West + 600. More appreciative applause from the VuGraph audience was heard - this seat would go right to the wire..
