The Tory East-West in the open room were playing the Blue Club and the busy defensive bidding of the Lib-Dems sitting North-South gave them a rough ride. When East was reluctant to accept a non vulnerable penalty his partner was forced to play at an uncomfortably high level in hearts. Declarer ruffed the opening club lead, cashed two top trumps and two diamonds ending in hand, before playing a spade to the ten to end-play South. Unable to play spades, South led another club, so declarer threw one spade while ruffing in dummy and West's other spade loser went on the fifth diamond. A breathless +650 for the Tories, maybe, but the benefit of playing in the 4-4 fit was apparent to all the appreciative spectators.
